5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction, March 8, 2003
    By A Customer
This review is from: Introduction to Wireless Systems (Paperback)
This book is a very impressive introduction to wireless systems. Since I knew practically nothing before getting this book, and I was attempting to use Stuber, this book was a life saver.

There are many many diagrams that clearly show the affects of fading (ralyeigh, lognormal etc), as well as very clear derivations of how rayleigh is produced from two normal R.V.'s and so on.

I also really liked all the examples. There must be 15 examples per chapter (compared with 1 per chapter in Stuber, and his chapters are like 150 pages long).

To understand this book you will need a least one course in "signals and systems" as well as a course that deals with probability (up to Normal distributions and random variables and processes would also help you), and a course on modulation theory, such as quadrature and inphase components and power spectral density. If you have that background information you will really enjoy this book.

This book is even more of an introduction that... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars This is a bad book, September 24, 2011

This review is from: Introduction to Wireless Systems (Paperback)
This a bad book, and in quite a number of spots it is just flat out wrong/misleading/wrongly labeled etc. Sadly, it was required text for a class I am doing in wireless communication. I have never had such a bad time, since the teacher was constantly correcting silly errors that the book had made. Some examples are:
    1. In section 2.1 it uses some formulas to calculate power received, the problem here is that the author mislabels his formulas, so if you don't have help, it is quite a feat to follow, and understand what the author is trying to do.
    2. section 2.3.3 where he describes "frequency dispersive behavior of the channel", but the section is called, "time dispersive behavior of the channel.
The book is littered with stupid mistakes like this, and if you are made to buy this book, just ask your teacher why he/she hates you.

5.0 out of 5 stars semiconductor optical detectors, February 15, 2006
I have owned this book since 1988.The book is an excellent referecne book that details the basic physics as well as characteristics (needed for design)of different types of radiation detectors. The discussion of theory behind "detectivity",fgigure of merit, speed of response, signal to noise ratio, various sources of noise in semiconductor detectors, etc. are key items in any design. The info. on Focal plane array type detectors, shottky based diode structrues, PIN, APD, photoconductors are precise .I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning physics of semiconductor detectors structures. ref.: www.daghighian-henry.com

The author strips away the diluted contemporary fantasies based on the Dracula character and gets back to its true core. The tale is interwoven with rich historical detail. Cutugno has obviously done his research. The author stares into the heart of darkness and reveals that truth is stranger than fiction. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vlad Dracul, great historical take on the man (not the vampire!), December 27, 2011
        Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: IN DRACULA'S TIME (Kindle Edition)
I had previously researched the life of Vlad Dracul because of my love of the legends surrounding him. This book places the reader on the ground towards the end of Vlad's reign. It's gritty, well-written, and actually left me with some compassion for Vlad. They were incredibly hard times, as history will show. To build a story around this famous character was a great feat; to build a story without the silliness is a beautiful experience for the reader. Well done!

This review is from: IN DRACULA'S TIME (Kindle Edition)
In Dracula's Time is a page turner and a fascinating read. It came to me as a recommendation and I wasn't sure what to expect. It was somewhat bloody for my tastes, but not overmuch, and the history and story line is compelling. The Vlad Drakul character is an original and he remained enigmatic even while he is revealed. And I enjoyed the story within the story structure that the writer uses and the connection that is made to Bram Stoker's original Dracula. It's a book that makes you think while it entertains. I recommend it.

        Product Description

The book begins with an overview of the constraint-based perspective on systems and organizations, commonly referred to as the theory of constraints or synchronous management. The first section will guide you through the fundamental principles and processes that are the backbone of the thinking process application tools.
The second section contains the step-by-step guidelines for each of the five thinking process application tools. These tools utilize sufficient cause thinking and necessary condition thinking.
Third section introduces two ways that two or more of the thinking process application tools are combined, providing robust processes for the understanding and communicating problems and solutions.
This book can be used as a field guide to learning the five thinking process application tools as needed, based on their own particular issues. You will have a full understanding of the theory and practical application of these powerful processes, including when and when not to use each tool. The total benefit is not just to apply the thinking process, but to develop intuition and have the ability to combine logic and intuition in the same thinking process.

At the end of the book, the author states

"My intent with this book was to provide you with a user friendly set of guidelines to the Thinking Processes"

Lisa has succeeded brilliantly in accomplishing this goal! Goldratt, through his business novels, "The Goal", "It's Not Luck", "Critical Chain", and "Necessary But Not Sufficient" laid a foundation which enables anyone to ease into an understanding of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) and the Thinking Processes (TP).

"Thinking for a Change" is one of a number of books which build on Dr. Goldratt's work. The Thinking Processes are explained and illustrated in layman's terms. The situations (dilemmas) used to illustrate Thinking Process applications include scenarios from both the business world and everyday family issues.

Upon reading this book, you will gain an understanding of the following:

This review is from: Thinking for a Change: Putting the TOC Thinking Processes to Use (The CRC Press Series on Constraints Management) (Hardcover)
I have been inrterested in Theory of Constraints for many years. However, I work in a world that is slow to change and did not offer the opportunity to openly apply this new theory. Recently the international corporation that I work for, asked me to undertake a study on one of our internal benefit programs. Three years running this problem was a major employee hot spot on the satisfaction survey. Despite numerous efforts the problems remained. As part of a working group I was asked to see what I could find out. I had just read Lisa's book and decided this was an ideal opportunity to do a complete Theory of Constraints approach on this issue. When I told senior management they were skeptical, but decided anything was worth a try. It was scheduled for a six months study. I said I would follow the processes in Lisa's book. Bottom line results: Lisa's book has processes that you can follow immediately after reading; the processes keep you on track; the problem... Read more

This review is from: Thinking for a Change: Putting the TOC Thinking Processes to Use (The CRC Press Series on Constraints Management) (Hardcover)
I recently finished reading the Thinking for a Change book and I am very impressed. I have now bought at least a half dozen copies and have started distributing them at work. This book is the most straightforward approach to actually beginning to apply the Thinking Processes that I have seen to date, and I have been doing a fair amount of reading on this over the past few months as my long term interest in TOC got revived six to eight months ago.

I have found this book and Thomas McMullen's book on the Theory of Constraints Management System to the be the best written of the latest crop of books to come out on this subject. Bill Dettmer's books provide much more detail, but Scheinkopf's stands out for its easy to follow examples and straightforward methodology.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in making more rapid progress toward their business or personal goals.
