Product Description

An engaging guide to excelling in today's venture capital arena

Beginning in 2005, Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson, managing directors at Foundry Group, wrote a long series of blog posts describing all the parts of a typical venture capital Term Sheet: a document which outlines key financial and other terms of a proposed investment. Since this time, they've seen the series used as the basis for a number of college courses, and have been thanked by thousands of people who have used the information to gain a better understanding of the venture capital field.

Drawn from the past work Feld and Mendelson have written about in their blog and augmented with newer material, Venture Capital Financings puts this discipline in perspective and lays out the strategies that allow entrepreneurs to excel in their start-up companies. Page by page, this book discusses all facets of the venture capital fundraising process. Along the way, Feld and Mendelson touch on everything from how valuations are set to what externalities venture capitalists face that factor into entrepreneurs' businesses.

  • Includes a breakdown analysis of the mechanics of a Term Sheet and the tactics needed to negotiate
  • Details the different stages of the venture capital process, from starting a venture and seeing it through to the later stages
  • Explores the entire venture capital ecosystem including those who invest in venture capitalist
  • Contain standard documents that are used in these transactions
  • Written by two highly regarded experts in the world of venture capital

The venture capital arena is a complex and competitive place, but with this book as your guide, you'll discover what it takes to make your way through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's like having Brad whispering in your ear when you pitch VCs, July 18, 2011
    By
DROdio (San Franicsco, CA) - See all my reviews
(Note - although the book isn't available yet, you can get it on a Kindle immediately -- that's what I did)

I'm CEO of a tech company based in Silicon Valley, and I've been reading Brad's blog for a long time.

I wasn't sure how much new information the book would provide -- after all, just following the blogs of top Valley-based entrepreneurs and VCs provides a wealth of information (Brad Feld, Fred Wilson, Steve Blank, Mark Suster, pmarca, Sean Ellis, Ben Horowitz -- the list goes on)

But the book delivers in a few key areas: First off, Brad & Jason break down the entire process from soup to nuts. That's great for first-time entrepreneurs. I wouldn't be surprised if this book became the bible of startup incubator programs. There's enough detail to make it feel fresh, but it's not so dense that it's hard to get through. I would suggest a re-read though, especially if you're completely new to fundraising (like Dick Costolo says in the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Become an insider, July 17, 2011
It seems like a lot of deals that you hear about from the VC world are all done by insiders. Part of that is just perception, but part of it is reality: People who've done lots of VC deals get VC funding much more quickly and easily.

Part of that, clearly, is the track record. I think another part of it, however, is just the world of VC. The actual VCs are so busy that they just don't have time to give a whole education to the founders of the companies that are seeking funding. They want to deal with someone who speaks their language.

That's why this book is so useful. Any reader who really gets immersed in every page won't be able to help but emerge from the experience with an imprint of the language of VC. If you really read it, you'll have the advantage of at least sounding like an insider, someone who really has the language down. If you have the language down, well, that's the crucial first step.

If you were thinking of moving to, say,... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading if you're starting a tech business, July 17, 2011
You need to read this book if you are running a startup or plan to start a company soon. If you're like me, you've probably scoured the internet for this sort of information before. There are some fantastic blogs out there, but it's very difficult to find detailed and specific information. All you need to know about raising money is here, in a nice package. Go buy it now.

Brilliant, Crazy, Cocky: How the Top 1% of Entrepreneurs Profit from Global Chaos

    Product Description

An unforgettable portrait of the emerging world's entrepreneurial dynamos Brilliant, Crazy, Cocky is the story about that top 1% of people who do more to change their worlds through greed and ambition than politicians, NGOs and nonprofits ever can. This new breed of self-starter is taking local turmoil and turning it into opportunities, making millions, creating thousands of jobs and changing the face of modern entrepreneurship at the same time. To tell this story, Lacy spent forty weeks traveling through Asia, South America and Africa hunting down the most impressive up-and-comers the developed world has never heard of....yet. The individuals profiled in Brilliant, Crazy, Cocky are distinct products of their own cultures, yet they share that same unmistakable cocktail of delusion, ambition, and brilliance that drove Bill Gates, Fred Smith, Donald Trump, and every other iconic American entrepreneur of the last few decades.

I have never met Sarah Lacy as of writing this and am posting this review right before the book's official launch. I grew up in developing countries, have lived through rawness, and work in technology in Silicon Valley -- this book really hit home. Lacy has really done her research and written a compelling and current analysis of our world. I thought the focus on China, India, Brazil, Indonesia and Rwanda as top emerging economies, and what that means for the US, was very apt. The personal stories of people who overcame overwhelming odds to build and rebuild their societies, especially the opening chapter on a Brazilian entrepreneur, were deeply moving.

I felt inspired and bought two more copies to gift to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Big Risk, Big Ambition, and Big Heart!, March 23, 2011
I read Sarah Lacy's new book Brilliant, Crazy, Cocky: How the Top 1% of Entrepreneurs Profit from Global Chaos (URL), several weeks ago. It has been simmering in the back of my mind; my attention turning back to it again and again in light of recent events and the role of social media in unseating societal structures throughout the Middle East.

Brilliant, Crazy, Cocky is an excellent book. She takes you around the world in her travels to emerging countries. You feel like you are in the room (...or village hut) with her as she interviews these brave and risk-loving entrepreneurs. You get a real feel for the struggles their countries face, the real hardships the people encounter, AND, more importantly, how these key people are revolutionizing their corners of the world by solving real problems. Paul Carr has done an excellent job of highlighting a few of these personal stories here: [...].

The key idea is that entrepreneurs in emerging economies are, and will... Read more

In my point of view the book is inspiring yet realistic, it is very well written and as it mixes the stories of each entrepeneur with country information it takes you on the Joirney the author took. It cojveys positive and realistic opinion om entrepeneurship and business in emerging economies. I read it all the way in four hours!

I was looking for a first body book with clear plastic pages to show body organs, and my local book store special ordered this book instead. Boy were we lucky! No plastic pages, but 7 beautifully designed cardboard pages with lift up flaps. As a Biologist, I love this book! It uses lots of correct terms like villi and alveoli, and some reasonablle ones like spit and windpipe. The pictures really give a sense of what goes where, and how things work. Each page covers an entire system such as eating and excreting, or bones and muscles.

Not every 4 year old will enjoy this book. But if yours is like ours and absorbs facts about dinosaurs and begs for nature shows instead of Barney, this hits the jackpot.

And the kicker is, it even has sturdy lift up flaps with additional facts. This lets even our 2 1/2 year old interact. He had such fun when we did muscles (they can only pull, never push - squeeze the biceps gently and lift the upper arm, squeeze the... Read more

I scoured the local library for a good beginner book on anatomy to introduce my 3 year old to how her body works. I wanted accuracy and great pictures. It is a great library, but the options just weren't there. The available books were either too simple or too wordy, and none of them had stellar illustrations. This book by Usborne is amazing! I think I have even learned a thing or two, and my 3 year old LOVES it. For that matter, so does her 2 year old sister. Who would have guessed that this would make anatomy so interesting. A word of caution, though. This book takes FOREVER to read (30 min++)! I am very impressed with the details in this book and the fact that it thoroughly explains such things as digestion, the cardiovascular system, the nervous system, the pulmonary system (lungs), and the bones, muscles, and 5 senses without getting boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars Four-year old LOVES this book, November 1, 2009
This review is from: See Inside Your Body (Board book)
We are an Usborne family and this is my son's favorite book hands down! He is so interested in learning how things work, why they work and the small details of EVERYTHING. He is simply intrigued with the human body and how it functions. This books is amazing, great explinations, easy to read and understand and best of all the flaps are sturdy. My son has learned so much and spouts off how the kidney and other organs work to people he meets, it's really quite comical.

I would reccomend it to any child and any reading level.
