What I like most about this book is that it covers all the important and renowned theories in this field, such as Costa and McCrae's Big Five traits, Freud's idea of defense mechanisms, Maslow's hierarchy of needs, Bandura's observational learning, Erikson's stages of psychosocial development and Bowlby's attachment styles among others. These concepts may be seemingly diverse and unrelated, but McAdams manages to integrate them very well using his idea of three different levels of personality: forming an outline with traits, knowing some of the person's details through motivational, cognitive and developmental concerns and finally constructing an individual's life stories.
