Published in 2008, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the 1st novel in a trilogy by the same name. The 2nd and 3rd installments, Catching Fire and Mockingjay, were released the following years by Scholastic.

The novel follows a girl named Katniss living in a future, dystopian society, where she competes in an extreme reality T.V. show called the “Hunger Games.” The book was a commercial megahit, selling almost 1 million copies in the U.S. It has since been translated into 26 languages and sold in 38 countries.

The Hunger Games was also well received by critics – in addition to winning the prestigious California Young Reader Medal, the novel was named a New York Times Notable Children’s Book and 1 of Publishers Weekly’s Best Books of the Year.

A film of The Hunger Games is scheduled for worldwide release by Lions Gate Entertainment in March 2012.
