Product Description

Today's competitive environment requires that companies distinguish themselves in the marketplace using factors other than prices. Companies that excel at on-time delivery, short cycle/leadtime, quality, and fast response to the market gain a competitive edge - and have the ability to market based on these features.
A proven approach to achieve this is the Theory of Constraints (TOC) production solution known, as drum-buffer-rope scheduling. Just in time (JIT), Total Quality Management (TQM) and other philosophies aim at exploiting these competitive edge factors. However, accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurements continue to be the biggest stumbling blocks to companies wishing to improve their financial performance with these tools.
Agreement on the need for a measurement system that encourages local actions in line with bottom line results is common, but solutions have remained elusive. Whether a company is pursuing JIT, TQM, or TOC, cost accounting is the common enemy.
Attempts have been made to introduce "new" costing methods such as activity based costing and economic value added, but they have failed to recognize the basic difference between product costing for financial statement purposes and collective management information to make real time decisions.
The Measurement Nightmare shows you how to resolve the conflicts and remove the accounting systems, financial, and incentive measurement roadblocks to adopting TOC, thereby gaining improved performance and sustaining competitive advantage. The techniques that the author, leading authority Debra Smith, has implemented and tracked at various companies highlight "the productivity measurement nightmare". Especially important are the day-to-day tools she developed to ensure successful implementation.

As the CEO of a company who has invested much time and resources to the (TOC) Theory of Constraints Management Philosophy, one thing kept coming back around to frustrate our implementation efforts. It was that of making the bridge from our current methods of measuring our performance and GAAP accounting system to that of TOC measures and TOC accounting. By this book, Debra Smith has given us the tools to do just that. I was sufficiently impressed with the contents, that I made it mandatory reading for all managers, from the CFO down to the shop foreman. This single book has managed to succulently illustrate what it took volumes in other publications to do. In short I highly recommend, and consider it must reading for both beginning and seasoned proponents of the Theory of Constraints Management Philosophy.

This is far and away the most entertaining managerial accounting text ever written. Smith illuminates the flaws in traditional accounting measures with humorous (unless they happen to you), real disaster stories. Each story includes explanations of the classical accounting analysis (or misguided blind pursuit of efficiency) which caused the disaster and a discussion of more appropriate metrics.

That people often let the way employers measure them influence their on the job behavior is a double edged sword. People measured stupidly just may behave stupidly (because the stupid measures will punish them if they behave wisely). Any CFO or managerial accountant who does not thoroughly understand this book may, with all the best intentions, put her/his entire organization at risk. The disaster stories lose some humor in the first person.

Read it because its fun. Apply it because it works.

This remarkable book manages to cover a wide array of topics (TOC, metrics, accounting and GAAP compliance and implementation and strategy issues)in approximately 200 pages and still impart a deep message. The message is not subtle - don't be a lemming just because 'you've always done it this way'. Actually, the message is much deeper and also encompasses how to measure the right things.

What I like most is the fact that the author can write clearly and hold your attention while at the same time providing you with enough information to cause you to rethink the way you're currently doing business - and giving you a clear path to doing it better. The book starts out with eye-opening stories from the author's past experience of companies what were measuring the wrong things based on myopia. She then introduces TOC, discusses how traditional accounting metrics and indicators can be aligned to TOC, and goes deeper into TOC with a direct emphasis on how it relates to accounting... Product Description

Today's managers encounter tremendous resistance in getting others to buy-in to change. The ongoing rounds of downsizing and upheaval have taken their toll, leaving a legacy of skepticism. Therefore, managers must not only have ideas, but must be experts at "selling" the correct answers, information, and measurements to address issues of change.
Securing the Future uses the Theory of Constraints, a breakthrough improvement methodology, to provide solutions to today's management problems. It documents the step-by-step approach to achieving a strategic vision of long-term competitive advantage, employment security, and customer satisfaction. Using a combination of parable, methodology, and case studies, this book presents an in-depth management road map to exponential improvement in any organization.
If you are looking for concrete ideas on how to build the intellectual capital your organization will need in order to thrive in years to come, Securing the Future will show you the way.

I am a Jonah's Jonah focused on eliminating market (external) constraints in a variety of industries. I found this book while taking the External Constraint Course at the Goldratt Institute. While the Eli Goldratt book "Its Not Luck" was inspirational and the Institute class was excellent, "Securing the Future" is what I refer to day by day.

It is rare to find a book with so much valuable information and so well written, that also loses my attention as abruptly as Securing the Future.

Gerald Kendal does an excellent job of explaining T.O.C. and comparing other improvement initiatives, as well as providing very useful examples of the various trees and diagrams used during the process of analyzing an organization. The clarity of the examples is among the best I have seen. Unfortunately, about a third of the way through the book, examples he provided of methods to solve certain customer service issues seemed so absurd to me, it was very difficult to take any of the remaining material with any seriousness.

My first negative reaction came when the author suggested that companies hire a full time person to turn customer dissatisfaction into profit, paying that person 25% of any increased profits. While this sounds like a grand idea on the surface, measuring such improvements for the purpose of... Read more

This review is from: Securing the Future: Strategies for Exponential Growth Using the Theory of Constraints (The CRC Press Series on Constraints Management) (Hardcover)
This book provides practical tools to increase profits for your organization. Gerald Kendall shares the criterion to prioritize/choose themes for improving customer satisfaction. He suggests that one should focus on those issues for improvement so that the customer is either willing to pay a higher price or ready to give you additional volume, or this would prevent the customer from switching over to a competitor. Improving those customer dissatisfactions, that would not result in one of the above, would not benefit your organization at all. I find many such tips through out this book.

      Product Description

A major rewrite of Dettmer's classic Goldratt's Theory of Constraints, this new edition presents a whole new approach to building and applying logic trees. The logical thinking process referred to in the title is nothing less than a broadly applicable, systems-level approach to policy analysis. Dettmer has streamlined the process of constructing the logic trees while simultaneously ensuring that the results are more logically sound and closer representations of reality than ever before. He explains an easier, more logically sound way to integrate Current Reality Trees with Evaporating Clouds. His new version of the thinking process "retires" the Transition Tree in favor of the marriage of a more detailed Prerequisite Tree and critical chain project management. This book contains new examples of logic trees from a variety of real-world applications. Most of the diagrams and illustrations are new and improved. Explanations and procedures for constructing the logic trees are considerably simplified. Completely new to this edition is a unique graphical software application - Transformation Logic Trees, designed primarily to create thinking process logic trees and only secondarily for other flowcharting uses. Provided on the accompanying CD-ROM is a full-function, unrestricted copy of version 1.0 for new and experienced users of the thinking process alike to use in building their logic trees. Appendix J in the book provides more information on how to install and use the software.

The most comprehensive, easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to finding real solutions to problems I face in business every day. Dettmer has created the definitive guide for applying Goldratt's Logical Thinking Process. The book is loaded with great examples and presents a much more streamlined approach to building the logic trees, including the Current & Future Reality Tree, Conflict Cloud and the Prerequisite and Transition Trees. Additionally, Dettmer introduces and details how to build the most useful tool I've ever used in business, the Intermediate Objective Map, which helps Managers define where they want to be (the goal), to compare against where they are today.

If you really want to find the key leverage points to fundamentally improve your business, this book will give you all the tools you need to achieve your goal.

I own every book Dettmer has written (or co-authored). This is hands down the best. Most thorough. Must own. Ever. Period.

Just skimming the various appendices will amaze! If you did not already know it, building "logic trees" is a lot of work. Hard work. But Dettmer streamlines some of that effort by sharing new insights gained from teaching the Logical Thinking Process for the last ten years. You could say that this revision to Goldratt's Theory of Contraints is at least 25% new material. Maybe as much as 30-35%!

Plus, the material on effecting change is a huge bonus. Talking about Col. John Boyd and his OODA Loop; Jim Collins and Level 5 Leadership (and more), this book is the one Dettmer book to own, if you must limit your spending.

This review is from: The Logical Thinking Process: A Systems Approach to Complex Problem Solving (Hardcover)
If you are serious about solving your difficult problem, there is no better starting point than Dettmer's book. That said, the process is not easy. You will identify the undesirable effects and construct diagrams to help you discover the root causes. You will identify the limiting factors that prevent you from achieving your goals. You will identify the intermediate objectives which help you reach your goals. And you will learn more acronyms than you thought you could ever remember. Perhaps you will even become a better thinker. Use this book to understand Goldratt's Thinking Process, and to solve your difficult problem.
