What is actually in the book I found to be very useful. This book covers essential barware, glassware (with drawings), mixers/garnishes, and techniques (including how to flame a drink & how to properly layer drinks). The drink recipes are broken down into these categories: Cocktails Classique, The Martini, Urban Chic, Punch Up That Party, From the Tropics, Naughty Drinks, and Finishing Touches. The drinks I have tried so far have been very good, and have a good jumping board for alcohol to mixer ratio in each recipe. There is also a glossary with some brief descriptions of the liquors, types of cocktails (ie Sling, Rickey), and various other terms associated with mixing. Perhaps the most helpful part of this book is the index. This lists all the drinks first by name, then by primary alcohol, and finally by color/flavoring. Some people might think this book is a little pretentious, but then again, mixing cocktails is sort of a pretentious thing to do. Among my growing collection of bar books, this is one I will continue to refer to. It is useful if for a novice if not ideal, covering what mixers, garnishes and equipment are needed to stock a bar. Each recipe tells what kind of glass and garnishes to use, but I had to ask a friend what "cracked ice" is. He said whack it with a spoon. The three indexes are especially helpful. They cover "Drinks by Name," "Drinks by Primary Alcoholic Ingredient," and "Drinks by Color/Flavoring." Today I have freshly squeezed orange juice. The third index offers 6 orange juice choices, though surprisingly not Tequila Sunrise, which does appear in the first two indexes. Still, the book is small enough for browsing. As a genuine novice (who else doesn't know what cracked ice is?), I need more help with the presentation of beverages than I get from this book. The... It provides recipes to the classics and all of their variants, newly fashionable drinks, and provides rational commentary on the ingredients--whether to use the pricey ones or not, and what equivalents you might use. It even provides a guide to the barware for each drink. The book is well constructed and attractive. Its enjoyable just to thumb through it, and to see what is in so many drinks. The mixing trends come out after a brief review of the many drinks--you can easily expand your cocktail repertoire without the fuss of mixing and failing several times. I recommend the book as a basic bar staple. If you enjoy the art of "mixology," this is a fun sourcebook. This book not only tells how to create really memorable drinks for yourself and guests, it also delves into the history of the various spirits and how they've been combined by savvy bartenders to create classics old and new. I've read through it several times, lapping up classics like the sidecar and DeGroff signature drinks like the Ritz. If you like cocktails, this is an amazing book. Nobody cares about getting the best results like Dale. He uses different names for the same spirit in different pages of the book which leads to a bit of confusion - No cross reference of recipes by main spirit. I wish the book would have broken down the recipes by main spirit. Recipes with vodka, recipes with tequila, and so on. - Some spirits are undefined in the book. There are several recipes that have spirits that aren't defined anywhere on the book. While it lasted (and I can testify that its demise had nothing to do with the quality of the drink and food) DeGroff's Blackbird bar/restaurant in Manhattan was a place I enjoyed going when I could spare the time and cash. When you got DeGroff into the realm of the bitters-tinged cocktail, his subtly aromatic, complex, and a little bit dark and twisted drinks were a treat for the nose and tongue, even as his urbane presence and stylish economy of motion made it clear you were in the presence of a Real Bartender. I still remember the first Sazerac I had there, and the way it unfolded to my senses. Although in the ensuing years, when it comes to that particular drink, I've developed a slight preference for the simpler perfection of the classic (just rye, Peychaud's Bitters, simple syrup, Herbsaint) Sazerac, I still enjoy the plot twists in the story told by DeGroff's fancified...
